The Best and Worst of Dystopian Fiction!

Ah, dystopian fiction. Quite easily one of the best genres out there. Full of amazing books, many of which I have not read. Of course, that doesn't mean all of its books are great. Out of the dystopian novels I have encountered, there's been a fair share of both hidden gems and disappointing worlds.

So, today, I will share my favourite and least favourites (thus far!)

The Best: The Arc of Scythe Trilogy by Neal Shusterman

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

This series is surprisingly underrated, but I really want to shed some light on it! The characters and romances are complex and interesting, the plot is unique, and the writing style is great. The setting too; it's very original and different, but in a completely GOOD way. The first book starts with the story of two young people training to become scythes.

The Worst: The Matched Trilogy by Ally Condie

Matched, by Ally Condie, is the first novel in the Matched trilogy. The novel is a dystopian young adult novel about a tightly-controlled society in which young people are "matched" with their life partners at the age of 17.

I did not like this series because it was just so boring and un-inspired. Just from reading the back of the first book, I knew exactly how the series was to end. Who Cassia was going to end up with, specifically, which is a main point of this book. Furthermore, there weren't any plot twists that made me want to keep reading. It was so predictable most of the time, with the few plot twists included not being exciting at all. The setting was confusing and I think the author could have taken more time to establish it. The characters all had pretty good back stories, but I would have liked to see more character development as the series progressed. Cassie was boring, Ky was boring, Xander was boring too. The writing was also nothing amazing; average at best.

Thank you for reading this post of I Rant About Books! As always, catch me in the comments section or anywhere else. I won't be posting for the next few weeks because exams are coming up and I am focusing on studying. Give me post ideas for the summer!! And book recommendations <3!

Love, Lara
